Switching from Android to iPhone: Here's where Apple's phone wins and fails

Gambar
I hopped on the Android bandwagon early: I sold my iPhone 3G in 2009, bought an HTC Hero, and never looked back. I've been using Android every day since then, writing about Google's platform as a tech journalist. Nonetheless, I've tried to keep pace with iPhone developments, and recently set aside a week of my life to get reacquainted with Apple's smartphone. I put all my Android phones in a drawer and settled into life with the iPhone 11 Pro. Admittedly, the iPhone does some things extremely well, even for a long-time Android user like myself. However, there are also plenty of things I hate with a fiery passion. Where the iPhone wins Apple's Taptic Engine: Haptics are an underappreciated but important aspect of interacting with a smartphone, and Apple understands this. The "Taptic Engine" is essentially a giant vibration motor bolted right to the iPhone's frame, and it's fantastic. The haptic feedback is tig...

The Weather Channel brings localized COVID-19 updates to your phone

Gambar
The Weather Channel and its parent company IBM (yep, who knew?) have teamed up to bring coronavirus data, maps and charts to your phone. They're importing data from sources like the World Health Organization (WHO), and including info from reliable local and state sources, so you can get a picture of how the virus is spreading near you, across the country and around the globe. This new coronavirus tracking will be available in The Weather Channel iOS and Android apps, on weather.com/coronavirus and in an online dashboard. The offerings include AI-powered "Incident Maps," which show stats like confirmed COVID-19 cases by US state and county, and trend graphs that show spread by US state. There are links to the latest news and videos from The Weather Channel team, and when possible, there are additional details including public health information, like locations of testing centers. The Weather Channel probably isn't the first source you think of for COVID-19 updates, but...

This App Promises to Turn Android Phones Into Extra Nintendo Switch Controllers

Gambar
Multiplayer is a great way to breath new life into a video game you've lost interest in, but if you're in need of extra controllers to let family or roommates join you for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this simple app promises to turn your Android smartphone into a wireless Joy-Con.DeepBlue Labs' Joy-Con Droid (available as a free, ad-supported app in the Google Play store) has been released as "Public Alpha" which is another way of saying that the development team knows there's still lots of bugs to quash before declaring the app officially ready and released. Joy-Con Droid connects your smartphone or other mobile device running at least Android 9 Pie so that it supports the Bluetooth Human Interface Device profile allowing it to function as a wireless mouse, keyboard, or gamepad for other devices, which in this case is the Nintendo Switch. In addition to emulating the right or left Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons with either controller's as...

We looked at it all, from battery specs to apps, screen size, display and more. ...

We asked you told us: Surprise surprise most of you are running Android 10

Gambar
Depending on which company makes your phone, you might get a new Android update right after it's announced, or you might need to wait months on end. The Android 11 Developer Preview has been a big topic of conversation this week, with the update now rolling out to Pixel phones. However, even though Google won't update its distribution chart to tell us the exact numbers, we know the majority of users are not even running Android 10, the latest stable version of Android. Well, not normal users, anyway. Last week we asked you which version of Android you're running, and the results shouldn't be all that surprising for an Android-focused website. What version of Android are you running? Results Out of over 1,300 total votes, 62% of voters said they're running Android 10, while 4% are already running the new Android 11 Developer Preview. I wouldn't expect anything less from people reading an Android website. Additionally, 23% are running Android 9 Pie, 6% are still on...

Apple CarPlay Android Auto aren't distracted driving saviors study says

Gambar
When Apple CarPlay and Android Auto first started rolling out, initial evidence showed they held promise to reduce distracted driving. These systems funneled the most important features from our phones onto the infotainment screen, after all. Yet, it looks like they're not as foolproof as once touted, following a new study from the UK's IAM Roadsmart, an independent road safety organization. The stark findings showed those using one of the smartphone mirroring systems in the car displayed reaction times slower than someone who'd used cannabis, and five times slower than someone driving with the legal limit of alcohol in their system. During the testing period, which involved 46 drivers, participants using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto took their eyes off the road fo...

Google unveils lightweight Camera Go app for budget phones

Gambar
Android Go, the lightweight mobile operating system designed for less-powerful phones, has been installed on more than 100 million devices, Google said Thursday. In addition to the milestone, Google introduced its new Camera Go app.  Camera Go is Google's attempt to ease the processing burden of often sluggish and memory-intensive camera apps.  "It's built for people using smartphones for the first time, so it has a clean and simple interface," Google said in a blog post. "And, most importantly, Camera Go tracks how much photo and video storage space you have left, and then it helps you clear up space so you never miss a shot."  Though it didn't offer an exact date, Google said the Camera Go app will be available on Nokia 1.3 and more Android Go ...

Pixel Themes adds a new clock feature and more in Android 11 DP2

Gambar
The new Android 11 Developer Preview 2 build is now available to download for its supported Pixel devices. As it turns out, Pixel phone owners will get to check out a revamped version of the Pixel Themes feature with this release. The Styles & Wallpapers section of Android 11 now shows a "Clock" icon at the bottom. That likely indicates that the lockscreen for the OS will soon fully support a customize clock visual. Right now, only the default clock design is available. Considering it has been added to the Styles & Wallpapers section, we can hopefully expect Google to add more custom functionality to this feature in the near future. In addition to the new (albeit non-functional) clock option, the Styles & Wallpaper section of Android 11 DP2 has a new look for the main wallpaper section. you can now see larger screenshots on the current wallpaper and lockscreen. There are also different categories of wallpaper you can browse through. Just swipe up to see the differ...

GitHub for Android and iOS launches out of beta

Gambar
Microsoft's GitHub today launched its native Android and iOS app out of beta. With the app hitting general availability, developers can stay in touch with their team, triage issues, and even merge code right from their mobile device. You can download the app now from Google Play and Apple's App Store. GitHub was founded in February 2008 — a mobile app was long overdue. The company announced its first native mobile app at the company's Universe developers conference in November. The iOS app debuted in beta then, and the Android beta app followed in January. Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in June 2018, though the company does not make enough money to be a line item in earnings reports. Still, GitHub is a massive platform — more than 40 million developers worldwide use it for programming various projects. The mobile app's launch happens to come at a good time: With the current COVID-19 coronavirus, more developers than ever are away from thei...

Here are the controllers Call of Duty Mobile supports on Android and iOS

Gambar
Call of Duty Mobile was an overnight sensation when it officially released last year, but not without some controversy. Certain features that players enjoyed during the beta period were removed before the game launched worldwide. The most controversial removal was Call of Duty Mobile controller support for both iOS and Android versions of the game. Fortunately, Activision heard player complaints and added the feature back in an update a few months after release. However, official support is limited to just a few controllers, and like in PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, using a controller will match you will other players using controllers to keep things fair. So which controllers does Call of Duty Mobile support and how do you connect them? Here's everything you need to know! Does Call of Duty Mobile have full controller support? As of November 2019, Call of Duty Mobile has limited controller support on iOS and Android. Currently only two controllers are officially supported, and they onl...

Google's Android Policy Blocks TV Makers From Using Amazon's Fire TV

Gambar
Google's licensing terms for Android prohibits phone manufacturers from producing devices with a forked version of Android. If they do, they may risk losing access to the Play Store and other Google Services. Apparently, this policy applies to Android TV as well. According to a new report from Protocol, any company that licenses Google's Android TV operating system or Android mobile OS can't use a forked version of the Android platform without risking support for the Play Store and other Google Services on all of its devices, including phones and tablets. This essentially means Android smartphone makers cannot choose to produce a TV running an Android fork, such as Amazon's Fire TV. That's unless they don't want Google Mobile Services on their phones, of course. Otherwise, they'll forcibly have to produce Android TVs or pick some other non-Android-based operating system, just like Samsung and LG do. The South Korean duo produce smart TVs running Tizen OS and...

Google’s biggest Pixel 4a rival might not be an Android OEM

Gambar
The Google Pixel 3a is a stellar affordable handset that stands out as a great value proposition in a market full of $1,000 technological behemoths. With decent specs, a great camera, and regular updates, it "sold well" according to the usually tight-lipped Mountain View. The upcoming Google Pixel 4a promises to be a very exciting follow-up, offering another inexpensive entry point in Google's take on Android. Given the current state of the market, the Pixel 4a should be a major win for Google. $1,000 phones aren't selling that well and manufacturers are gradually realizing that there's money to be made in the mid-tier market too. However, it might not be an Android manufacturer that's the biggest threat to the Pixel 4a nabbing some decent market share. Rumors point to Apple's iPhone 9 entering the market at just $399 as early as March. That's the same price as the Pixel 3a and presumably the entry point for the upcoming Pixel 4a. If true, this wouldn...

A billion Android phones are vulnerable to hackers — make sure yours isn't one

Gambar
British consumer-watchdog group Which? made some headlines last week when it declared that "more than one billion Android devices ... are vulnerable to attack by hackers."  At least one tech-news website replied, "Duh." That's because Which?'s revelation is old news and well known to anyone who understands the smartphone lifecycle. It's also why you need to replace your Android smartphone or tablet every 3 years, and your iPhone or iPad every 5 years. What to know about phone updates Gadgets get old quickly. Google releases a new version of Android every year and makes security updates only for that version and the two previous ones.  Which? said that "Google has whipped through Android versions like a hungry child set loose on the dessert trolley," but in fact Apple does the same and supports only the latest two versions of iOS. The difference is that while Apple makes sure each iPhone model can get OS updates for 5 years (and a few models h...

Report: iPhones are a bad investment, Android phones doubly so

Gambar
Much like investing in an automobile, smartphones lose value as soon as you drive them off the car lot. With the exception of rarities and some vintage bits of tech, smartphones of all sorts lose value over time. A report this week from a smartphone resale company showed data suggesting that Android smartphones lose their value at twice the rate of iOS smartphones – aka iPhones. Android phones and iPhone both bleed value A report from BankMyCell tracked four years of iPhone and Android phone trade-in value in the period ending in December of 2019. According to their calculations, iPhone trade-in value decline "is a steady decline," losing anywhere between 23.35% and 33.09% year on year. The average loss of trade-in value for an Android flagship phone, according to this same report, was over 45% per year. Averages in this data set suggest that the average Android flagship phone loses as much value i...

Here are the first 10 things you should do on your brand new Samsung Galaxy S20 phone

Gambar
source Antonio Villas-Boas/Business Insider I tweaked 10 different things on the stock Galaxy S20 to make the phone look and work better. Out of the box, Samsung's default settings don't take full advantage of its own capabilities, like the super smooth 120Hz screen. Many of these tweaks are aesthetic, so pick out the ones you like. Others are functional and can give you a better experience with the Galaxy S20. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. One of the things I love about Android phones is how much control you get over finer settings to make the phone look and feel the way you want it to. Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is a great smartphone, but it's not the greatest it could be. Surprisingly, some of Samsung's default settings don't make the most of some of the device's hardware, like its new 120Hz screen. That's one of the first few things you should change. Otherwise, there...
